Surgery Information

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASC) are also known as outpatient surgery centers or same day surgery centers. In simple terms, ASC-qualified procedures can be considered procedures that are more intensive than those done in the average doctor’s office, but not so intensive as to require a facility stay.

Avoiding hospitalization can result in cost savings to the party responsible for paying for the patient’s health services.ASCs do not routinely provide emergency services to patients who have not been admitted to the ASC for another procedure.

Information about our surgery center and details about procedures and policies are outlined below.

You will be called the day before surgery between 12-3PM with your child’s arrival time and fasting instructions.

The nursing care is provided by a team of professional registered nurses. The Director of Nursing is responsible for coordinating care in each clinical area. Please feel free to contact your nurse or Director of Nursing if you have questions or concerns.

One of our care providers will return your call as soon as possible. If you have an urgent situation after hours that you think requires a doctor’s attention, please call your physician’s office.

  • A pre-registration nurse will contact you in the days leading up to the procedure to ask you some questions about your child’s health history, medications (including over the counter and herbal remedies) and suggest ways to get ready for surgery. This information can also be sent to us online via this website.
  • One of our nurses will call you again the day before your child’s surgery. We will confirm your child’s arrival time, and exact times to stop eating solid food and drinking fluids.
  • You will be asked to arrive one and a half hours before your child’s surgery/procedure time.
  • All instructions are for your child’s safety and should be followed or your child’s surgery may not take place. Please ask questions and take notes to be sure you know what to do.
  • If your child gets sick, has a sore throat, cold, fever, etc. tell your child’s surgeon before the day of surgery.
  • Bathe or shower your child the night before to reduce the chance of infection.

For your child’s comfort and safety, there are several factors to keep in mind prior to your child’s surgery/procedure. Please remember, these can affect the recovery time and the results of your child’s procedure. Unless otherwise directed, the following instructions are required for anyone having surgery.

YOUR CHILD MUST NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER THE TIMES GIVEN BY THE SPSC NURSE.
Surgery may be cancelled or delayed if your child has consumed any food or fluids after the given times.

  • REMEMBER: You will be asked to arrive one and a half hours before your child’s surgery/procedure time. Please inquire to be sure you know what time to arrive.
  • Food and drinks are NOT ALLOWED in the waiting room or pre-op/pre-procedure areas.
  • Your child cannot have gum, mints or hard candies.
  • If your child takes daily medication, check with your child’s doctor about what to do the morning of your child’s surgery.
  • Please have no more than two adults accompanying your child. Two at a time may be allowed to visit the patient prior to and after surgery. (see Visitation Policy under Basic Info.)
  • A parent or legal guardian must remain in the facility until the child is discharged.
  • If there is a possibility that your child is pregnant, please be sure to discuss this with your child’s Surgeon and Anesthesiologist.
  • Have your child wear clothing that is easy to take off and put on.
  • Remove all body piercings.
  • If your child wear contacts, bring your child’s case and solution to store them in during surgery.

After completing registration, patients are escorted to a Pre-operative/pre-procedure area where the nurse will take vital signs and review your child’s health history. (Again: We ask that you not bring ANY food or drink into the waiting room or pre-op areas.) Your child’s surgeon, anesthesiologist and operating room team will visit you and your child in the pre-op area prior to the surgery/procedure.
Your child will walk, ride on the stretcher or be carried back to the OR by the nurse. Parents are NOT allowed in the OR suites or the OR hallway.

  • Information on the consent form will be explained to you before you sign it. Be sure you have all your questions answered so you fully understand what will happen and what to expect.
  • We will put an identification band on your child’s arm. Staff will confirm your child’s identity for surgery by asking your child’s family to say your child’s name and birthday (or other identifying information).
  • We will confirm type of procedure or location on your child’s body.
  • If your child’s procedure involves a question of left vs. right or has multiple choice of sites (like fingers and toes), the actual site will be marked on your child’s body by the doctor.
  • Just before the procedure begins, everyone in the operating room will take a short ‘time out’ and check that they are doing the right procedure on the right patient in the right place.

Pre-Op Information

After your child’s surgery or procedure, your child will be taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (Phase I Recovery) until your child is awake. Specially trained nurses will monitor your child’s vital signs while your child recovers from anesthesia. Your child will then be brought to the Phase II Recovery Unit where you will be waiting. Your child will be brought to you as soon as possible since no parents are allowed into the Phase I area. Your child’s vital signs will continue to be monitored, and they will be offered clear fluids to drink.

Plan for your child to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. Your child may feel sleepy and dizzy – THIS IS NORMAL. Follow specific instructions provided by your child’s surgeon regarding diet, exercise, resuming regular medication and gradually resuming normal activity. Contact your child’s surgeon for follow-up appointments as needed.

Call your surgeon’s office or after-hours number if you have any questions when your child gets home and dial 911 if there is a medical emergency.

Overnight Policies & Suggestions

For our patients spending the night we only allow one adult to spend the night with the child. They must be a parent or legal guardian and must remain in the surgery center at all times. If there is more than one child in the family having surgery, we request one adult per patient. We do not allow other small children or siblings to stay overnight. REMINDER: Visitors are allowed until 9pm.

We will provide all necessary fluid and dinner for the patient during their stay. We also provide a dinner for the parent that will spend the night. Keep in mind that the nutrition in our kitchen is FOR PATIENTS ONLY and parents and visitors must bring or buy their own drinks, snacks and lunch. We cannot provide microwaves and can only refrigerate individually wrapped/sealed items for patients. Since we ask not to bring food or drinks into the Pre-operative areas, we are happy to place them in your overnight room as soon as you arrive.

Your child is welcome to bring comfort items from home such as pillows, blankets, sippy cups, stuffed animals, games, tablets or DVD’s (our TV’s do not play Blu-Ray). We do provide basic cable and DVD players in each room. There are large recliner armchairs available for the parent spending the night. We also have pillows and warm blankets available.

The nurses will monitor your child’s vital signs, hydration, and pain for their entire stay. We will provide all medications as ordered by your child’s surgeon. Before you are discharged we will provide you with detailed instructions and a medication schedule for your child.

If someone is picking you up the next day, we recommend they arrive at CPS at 6am for your discharge. We do not open prior to 6am.
